The day

World COPD Day is November 18, 2026. It’s led by GOLD, and the 2026 theme is “Early Diagnosis & Management for a Better Life.”

The ask

Know the signs, ask for a breathing test, and if you have COPD, test once for Alpha-1.

About COPD

COPD is common, often missed and treatable. There’s more than one cause, and some COPD is genetic.

Alpha-1

Alpha-1 is an inherited cause of COPD. Guidelines recommend a one-time blood test for everyone with COPD.

The five questions

  1. I get short of breath doing everyday things.
  2. I have a cough that won’t go away, or mucus most days.
  3. My chest colds linger or keep coming back.
  4. I’ve breathed tobacco smoke, dust, fumes or polluted air at home or at work.
  5. Someone in my family has COPD, emphysema or Alpha-1.

If even one sounds familiar, ask about a breathing test. The interactive version is at worldcopdday.org.

Words to avoid: never call COPD “preventable” or imply someone caused their condition. Some COPD is inherited.

Posting rules

Five things to keep.

  • Open with GOLD. On November 18, post GOLD’s 2026 graphic first, then our tiles.
  • Credit GOLD. World COPD Day is led by GOLD. Keep “An observance led by GOLD · Promoted by AHIS” on every tile, and don’t make your own World COPD Day logo.
  • Keep the AI label. The people in these tiles are AI-generated. Keep “AI-generated image” in the alt text, and never pair a tile with a quote or personal story.
  • Don’t edit GOLD’s materials. Share GOLD’s graphic and press release as they are, with credit to GOLD.
  • No medical advice or products. Point people to their care team and to worldcopdday.org.
